Graduate Architectural Design II

Fall Semester 2013

Jeffrey ManDyck
Adjunct Assistant Professor

Course description:
The next generation of Mississippi River development seeks to (re)establish and integrate ecologies, infrastructure and architecture. And, presents a number of questions: how will this era of city development and architecture evolve without abandoning the riverfront's history?; how can a relationship between infrastructure and riparian wetland environments inform an architectural response and advance urban development?; and, how can infrastructure and design repair and revitalize our cities?

Emphasizing how design concepts contain the utility and permanence of infrastructure, the studio investigates how qualities of time, place and technology make architecture. Architecture, and the design process, must reveal the nature of its context, react to the history of place and adapt to the contemporary needs/desires of a program. Design explorations take the form of research, modeling and making through a fluid process moving between: the cerebral and the sensory; the macro and the micro; and the digital and physical.

The studio develops proposals for a riparian wetlands research laboratory and park reconnecting the city with the river by addressing architectural positions, urban patterns and natural flows.
