Public Interest Design - Tanzania

ARCH 5650
Spring Semester 2013

John Comazzi
Assistant Professor

Course Description:
This 4-credit Project Module offers graduate students in the College of Design the opportunity to participate in the second phase of an ongoing Public Interest Design program that began as a directed study with four graduate students in the architecture program during the Spring semester 2012. Working with several local NGO’s (Lavego and Educate Tanzania) and a school for orphans in a disadvantaged community outside Arusha, Tanzania (Tuamkeni School), four architecture students and Associate Professor John Comazzi conducted preliminary research and produced a preliminary needs/assets assessment to aid in the design process for a new school and orphanage for the students, teachers, and leadership of the Tuamkeni school. The design module began where the research left off; eleven graduate students developed two master plan proposals for the future development of the school.
