W. L. Hall WorkshopThe W. L. Hall Workshop provides equipment, facilities, staff, and instruction to College of Design students for the execution and enrichment of their educational experience. The Workshop provides a full complement of power and hand tools for the manipulation of wood and related media and a limited selection of equipment for the working of metals and other materials is also available. Workshop staff provide user assistance, training, and supervision while offering users an extensive knowledge of materials, tools, processes, and safety. Students must attend an orientation session to obtain a Shop User Card. User orientations include an introduction to the facility and staff as well as an outline of safe shop practices and equipment usage. Unsafe use of Workshop facilities or equipment may result in revocation of access to the facility. At over 3500 square feet, the W.L. Hall Workshop provides 2400 square feet of woodworking space, with 2 table saws, 4 band saws, 2 miter saws, 2 planers, drill press, scroll saw, plus a wide variety of stationary and portable power tools, and a complete array of hand tools. The shop is connected directly to the demonstration yard behind the building. The yard is used for research projects, such as the Wilder Affordable Housing Project—a collaborative research project of Architecture Faculty and the Center for Sustainable Building Research—that undertook the construction of a prototype OSB panel system house.
