100 Years of Student Drawings: Selections from the College of Design Drawing Archives

Ralph Rapson Hall, University of Minnesota

89 Church Street SE, Minneapolis, MN 55455

For a century, architecture students at the University of Minnesota have grappled with fundamental issues of program, site and structure. As design challenges facing architects changed over time, so too did studio projects and design philosophies. 100 Years of Student Drawings: Selections from the College of Design Drawing Archives will display a spectrum of student responses to a century of studio design problems. Alumni drawings from the Beaux-Arts era through the digital age will show a range of building types, representation styles, media and individual expression. The exhibition will be on view on the second floor of Rapson Hall. A related exhibit of original early works from the archive will be on display in the Architecture and Landscape Architecture Library.

Centennial Chromagraph

Ralph Rapson Hall, University of Minnesota

89 Church Street SE, Minneapolis, MN 55455

The Centennial Chromagraph is a life-size representation of the history of the School of Architecture. The project grew out of an Architecture as Catalyst studio taught by Adam Marcus, Cass Gilbert Visiting Professor, with guest instructor Nathan Miller of CASE in March 2013, which looked at ways of using computational design tools to generate formal and spatial constructions using large quantities of data―in this case, information collected from the 100-year history of UMN's School of Architecture. The installation consists of 100 CNC-routed plywood ribs, joined together with 8,080 colored #2 pencils. The curvature of the ribs expresses major historical eras of the school―the tenures of school leadership, the buildings the school has occupied, and the colleges the program has belonged to―while the pencil color reflects the changing composition of the school's degree programs over its first century. The Chromagraph will be on display now through the centennial weekend in the Frederick Mann Courtyard in Ralph Rapson Hall.
