Graduate ProgramsMaster of Architecture (M.Arch) The Master of Architecture Program at the University of Minnesota prepares students for the practice and discipline of architecture as a speculative, analytic, and investigative endeavor. Through rigorous methods of inquiry developed in the design studio, lectures and seminars, students acquire the breadth of knowledge required of the professional architect: the techniques and processes of representation, communication and analysis; the history and theory of making architecture and urban form for human use; and the technology, systems, processes and economics of construction and practice. This professional degree program is fully accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). The University of Minnesota has a strong tradition of leadership in student organizations. The CDes Student Board is oriented toward students in both the School of Architecture and the Department of Landscape Architecture. It holds regular meetings, open to all students, to discuss issues of interest to students in the professional programs; and it also sponsors a lecture series, a film series, and an annual juried exhibition of student work, documented in a published catalogue. The local chapter of the AIAS is a well-run and highly engaged student organization. Twice in recent years student leaders from AIASM have served as national AIAS executive officers. The local chapter of the AIAS also runs the nation’s largest mentoring program. Many students are also active in Habitat for Humanity and the AIA’s Search for Shelter charette; in initiatives such as Greening CALA, which brings principles of sustainable architecture to the operation of the architecture program and Rapson Hall; and as volunteers in the Environmental Literacy Program in Minneapolis’ public schools.
