Lucas is the principal of ALM Design Studio, a design practice focused on sustainable methods of construction and energy conservation. He teaches Architecture Design studio and was involved with the University of Minnesota's effort for 2009 Solar Decathlon Competition.

Lucas has worked for artists Bruce West in Portland, Oregon and Sandy Skoglund in New York and for the architectural offices of Mulfinger Susanka Mahady & Partners (now SALA Architects), Julie Snow Architects, and Alchemy Architects.
