Research initiatives
The M.S. in Architecture-Heritage Conservation and Preservation, at the University of Minnesota is affiliated with the College of Design's (CDes) Center for World Heritage Studies (CWHS), which has a unique, cooperative agreement with UNESCO's World Heritage Centre. This partnership links regional and national historic preservation agencies, global policy development, and heritage conservation practices through an exchange of faculty expertise and student training in historic preservation and cultural resources management related to UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The research initiatives of CWHS build on the partnership between CDes and the UNESCO World Heritage Centre and enhance the curriculum through education and student research opportunities. Recent projects include survey and documentation of the walled city of Baku, Azerbaijan -- an endangered World Heritage Site; development of a World Heritage Site nomination for Cranbrook Academy in Bloomfield Hills, MI; and consultation in the preparation of the World Heritage Site nomination for the Batanes Cultural Landscape, Philippines.
Students will also have the opportunity to engage specific areas of interest through collaboration with the College of Design's research centers, such as the Metropolitan Design Center, the Center for Sustainable Building Research, and other centers across the University of Minnesota, such as the Center for Rural Design, Center for Tourism, and others. CDes study abroad programs -- two of which are located in World Heritage sites -- and related faculty research further enhance this unique program. |
