M.S. in Sustainable Design

M.S. Program Options and Example Schedules

StudentStudents who enter the M.S. in Architecture-Sustainable Design Track may enroll in the program for only the M.S. degree or combine it with the M.Arch. degree. Listed below are example schedules that outline possible course sequences for students in either option: Option One: the M.S. (only) or Option Two: the dual degree which combines the M.S. and the professional M.Arch. (M.S. + M.Arch.).

Option One: M.S. in Architecture-Sustainable Design (M.S. Only)

Example Semester Schedule (M.S. -- three semester plan)

Year One

Fall Semester 12 credits total

  • ARCH 8561: Sustainable Design Theory and Practice 3 credits
  • ARCH 8567: Site and Water in Sustainable Design 3 credits
  • Elective (inside the discipline) 3 credits
  • Elective (outside the discipline) 3 credits

Spring Semester 12 credits total

  • ARCH 8563: Energy and Indoor Environmental Quality in Sustainable Design 3 credits
  • ARCH 8565: Materials Performance in Sustainable Buildings 3 credits
  • Elective (inside the discipline) 3 credits
  • Elective (outside the discipline) 3 credits

Year Two

Fall Semester, 10 credits total

  • Plan A Thesis or Plan B Projects 10 credits

Option Two: M.S. in Architecture-Sustainable Design + M.ARCH.
Dual Degree: M.S. + M.Arch.

Students who simultaneously enroll in the M.S. and the M.Arch. program may complete both programs in three and one-half years. Twenty-four credits can be overlapped in the M.S. and M.Arch. It is strongly recommended that the student in this situation select a Plan B projects/papers for the M.S. (10 credits) since the M.Arch. requires a Plan A Thesis (12 credits).

Candidates may consider completing the M.Arch. thesis after they have completed the Plan B projects/papers which may provide the research base for the M.Arch. thesis. For students already enrolled in the M.Arch., it is recommended that M.S. program applications to the Graduate School and the School of Architecture be submitted-at the latest-by the second year of the graduate program (GD 2) in order to develop a course plan and establish examining committee members. The following schedule is one example of how the M.S. and M.Arch. coursework could be integrated.

Option Two: Example Semester Schedule
